    Due to the global pandemic, the supply chain of conventional nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs is inadequate to meet the urgent demand of COVID-19 testing in the US.

    Traditional NP swab consists of a flocked bulb and a rigid shaft. The flocked bulb’s fibrous structure allows the absorbance of high volume of fluid. Similar or even higher performance of the swab bulb can be achieved by alternative structure designs that are enabled by OPT’s high resolution 3D printing technology.

    Recently, OPT has developed over 20 different swab prototypes and has optimized a “fibril” and a “stent “swab design. These swabs have been tested and have passed the evaluation from clinicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center related to collection sufficiency, and PCR inhibition.
